Dead & Breakfast is a Bay Area tribute band devoted to the living tradition of the Grateful Dead — not the nostalgia of it. The band draws from the full breadth of the catalog, from early acid-rock experiments to the sprawling modal jams of the ’70s. Their sets shift and breathe the way the Dead’s always did: structured enough to follow, loose enough to go somewhere unexpected.

The musicians behind Dead & Breakfast came up playing originals before they came to tribute work — which shows. Members have performed with Snap Judgment Live, the acclaimed storytelling show heard on NPR stations nationwide, and the band has even played for filmmaker Cameron Crowe. Rather than note-for-note replication, they bring their own musical instincts into the songs, honoring the improvisational core of what made the Dead extraordinary in the first place.

The result is a show that feels at home in a room like Smiley’s: intimate, unhurried, and built for the kind of crowd that sticks around.
